Mission and Outreach
The Advent Mission Committee has chosen Literacy DuPage to be the recipient of our Advent giving. Approximately 125,000 DuPage County residents struggle with limited English skills. Literacy DuPage is a local nonprofit with a mission to decrease that number every day. Literacy DuPage provides customized one-on-one English language tutoring to adults with low-level literacy skills who have difficulty accessing classroom instruction due to transportation obstacles, work schedules, or lack of childcare. This organization has 425 trained volunteer tutors servicing over 580 adult learners. The tutors work with each student individually, increasing their literacy skills which in turn enable them to learn new life skills and find better paying jobs. Some life skills students have attained are, making doctor and dentist appointments, reading signs, instructions, ads, and newspapers, using the telephone, calling school, writing resumes, and filling out applications. Your gift will provide tutor training and provide dictionaries and other workbooks for the students. Envelopes for giving are in the pew racks. Please make your check out to "St. Peter's", with "Advent Project" on the memo line.
